Population Density

Our city of Khanty - Mansiysk is a capital of Ugra. The estimated population of Khanty – Mansiysk as of 2013 is 90,000. Most people live in apartments or one family homes. The average family has 2-3 children. When young people marry, they try to build, buy or rent their own place.

Transportation

Most people go to work by: car, public transportation, walking.

Most students go to school by: school bus, public transportation, car (with the parents).

Most families have one or two cars. Some families also own bikes, motorbikes, snowmobiles, outboard motorboats and quadracycles for recreation as the city is situated on the bench of a very big river – the Irtyush and it is surrounded by woods.

Weather

Ugra is situated in the West Siberian plane. The climate here is rather severe.
January
January is the coldest month. The average temperature is -19-24 C. Quite often it gets even colder -40C.
March
In March there is still quite a lot of snow, but it begins to thaw.

June

June is the first really warm month. There is a lot of green, the sun shines, but it may snow sometimes. Many people go to the country - to barbeque or to go fishing.
September
It is still fairly warm in September. The colours of the nature are very bright: red, yellow, brown, orange and green. Autumn is a favourite season of many Russian poets. People often go to the woods to pick up berries, mushrooms and cedar cones (strobiles). Some people go hunting.

Winter sports are very popular: hockey, biathlon, skiing as well as other sports such as football, swimming, tennis, boxing and others.

Topography

Ugra is a vast region - 535,000 sq. km. There are grasslands, hills, some mountains and a lot of rivers and swamps. The statistics says there are 290,000 lakes and about 30,000 small rivers in Ugra. The largest rivers are the Irtyush and the Ob’. They meet just 15 km from Khanty - Mansiysk.

As the climate is severe it is difficult to farm here, though people grow some fruit and vegetables.

Most of the people work in timber, oil and gas industry. About 60% of all Russian oil is extracted here.

Languages

Our main language is Russian. People also speak their own languages, as the peoples of 123 different nationalities live in this region and in the city. The city of Khanty- Mansiysk is called after the names of the two small numbered indigenous peoples of the North - the Khanty and the Mansy. They belong to the same language group as the people of Finland and Hungary. Children mostly study English as a foreign language.

There are many religions, but most of the people are Christian (Orthodox) or Muslim. There are also those who profess no religion.
